Good on you Team

When the ‘best’ is expected from people, when standards are set that guide people and when recognition of their efforts are given people will rise to the occasion, do greater than even they believed possible, want to duplicate what happened and carry on with their endeavours. Other people will want to be involved in sharing in the positively flowing energy. The want become a need. Membership grows and further still the things that ‘happen’ generate more things.

Can we keep up?

I believe that every one of us can keep up and enjoy sharpening our talents and natural gifts, in the process taking each of us to greater heights.  Guiding allows us to Aim High and Look Wider Still.

  • Not sure what is happening to Jess Smith but she is unable to attend Tuesday meetings.

  • Looking to divide into two as the increase in age groups gets wider.
  • Badges: Gifted to Guides. Paid for by donation.
  • Promise and reaffirmation Ceremony : On Penny Hike.

Public Awareness and Relations:

  • Improving slowly as more  people become aware of Guiding in the District.

  • Debbie Gallagher contacted Latrobe City Council re having a meeting and resolving the backbiting coming from other usres of the Glendonald Maternal and Child Health Building (referred to as office)

  • Suggestion of the fielding a team into the Caner relay for life later in year.

Community Events

Sub Committees. The basic paper work and organisation is being done through the developing committees.

Hazelwood South Hall

  • Now have front entrance maintained.
  • 1 District activity to be held there in May.
  • Back area to be recreated as a brickery garden. Nearly completed.
  • Trees transplanted along fence line.
  • Keys: Copy cut and  given to Maya so that the computers can be deleivered to Hazelwood South Hall.
  • Bricks still there to take away until this is done.
  • Interest in use of hall for other District Team fundraising events is coming forth.

  • Uniforms: Available as of now from Guide Shop.
  • Street Collections – change to Guidelines – see documents on website under Region Leader Meetings
  • New PR Brochures – tabled. Contact GGV to order some.
  • Support Group and Support Team Consultant. – Pauline Butler..

–                     A past brochure “When your daughter joins Guiding so do you” which was given to all new girls’ parents when they joined.

–                     Brochures should not be gender specific – aimed at both parents.

–                     The need to have a captive audience eg badge presentation to get parents along to a function.

–                     Support Group needs to be driven by DLs and many Districts do not have a DL.

  • Fundraising vouchers – limited at present (currently only Coles Express, others later? Short expiry. Alecia can get them if interested)
  • Link Badge proposal – to be developed in Victoria as a blanket badge until approval etc from National for uniform.
  • Volunteer audit – each district and Burnet Park committee to complete and  email before 31 May

making a “brickery”

Well the ideas there.  The time frame is there too.  The front entrance gardens have been created.  Now the area out the back of the Hazelwood South Hall must be cleaned up by May 20th 2010.  So say all of us!!

So how do we get rid of the bricks out there?  Loads have been taken away by District team members and members of the public.  But  now the not so good ones are still there.  Moving these is out of the question. There just is not the ‘man-power’ or  petrol money to do this.

Then while some of the District team were present the idea of having a “brickery’ poped out.  Instead of making a rockery when we have bricks not rocks actually makes sense.

Most of the crappy bricks and mortar are actually on the old concreate slab built for the now demolished external toilets.  So if the rest of the mortar and the not so good bricks ghet dumped on the concrete slab too and then the good bricks are made into an edging  this is the basis of the ‘brickery’  There is tan bark out the front of the Hazelwood South Hall that bneeds to be used as well.  This tan bark will be wheel barrowed over too the brickery and placed in the ‘valleys between the brick and mortar piles.

Lastly  plants that last the really hot temperatures and wet seasons will be planted through out the “brickery”  Thus we have finally created our own “Gorilla Garden” at the back of the Hazelwood South Hall.  After the Latrobe City Council has dug away at our car park and entrance way we will be able to replace the historic orginial fence  line and have other Gorilla gardens at the front of the Hall entrances and the Churchill Small Bore Rifle Gun Club.

Creating a grand entrance!

The Hazelwood South Hall has a new look outside front entrance way.  While we wait with baited breath for the Latrobe City Council to spend millions on creating a side car entrance for members of the Churchill Soccer club which will take away a lot of parking and some of the Hazelwood South Reserve our own Hall entrance really began to look shabby. like the District needing revitalization this entrance desperately required upgrading.

Earlier when a District SWOT was compiled this front entrance, and that fact that the bricks were still out the back were considered both a weakness and a threat. The better bricks have been gradually leaving the area out the back. Surely even if we could not use these bricks for what the District Team originally envisioned there must have been something we could do with them around the Hazelwood South Hall!

When a new member of the District Team wanted to use the Hall it was suggested that something be done with the front entrance. What was envisioned had to to be place on a back burner. The team was stuck while other thing to over.  A light bulb flash of inspiration occurred.

There was an opportunity to use the bricks as well as the tan bark that had been donated earlier in the year.  Some members of the District team were available to load up wheel barrows with bricks, while one member chipped away at the mortar still on most of the bricks. Mean while others dug up and loaded the wheelbarrows with the tan bark.

Years ago a rose bush was planted by the Hazelwood Junior Guide  Unit in memory of Lady B-P. This rose bush has grown well and gets ‘trimmed’ vigoursly right back every few years.  Having just one large rose bush gives the entrance a lopsided feel. This rose bush, which  had previously been trimmed back a few weeks ago, got another trim.  Now we able to get in and more easily place the tan bark at the back of the rose as well.

Thanks to another member who went shopping in a nursery there are now two little plants growing there too.

That’s when the grand idea for a ‘brickery’ came up.  We’ll we don’t have rocks but there are a lot of old chipped bricks and mortar, good bricks still from the old toilet block and lots more wheel barrows of tan bark.  most of us have the plants at home for propagation.  Well developing  the ‘brickery’ is another story…

The yearly Region Dinner

Every Year the Region hosts a Region Dinner.  2010’s is on the 29th August.  This dinner is an open invite to all adults in the District – Guiding Team Members, the Olave Program [The Gipp’s Guides] members and the Leaders, Unit Helpers and District Leaders.  Since everyone who is over 18 years and is stake holder in this District Guiding “modis opperandi” why not come to the Dinner.  Yes there are guest speakers.  The meals are usually pretty good too.  Sorry folks but it is a pay for self when you attend. Interested then Contact District Leader and put forward your name before 1st August.
