Australia Day … Yes I’m Cool.

Australia Day 2009 [written by one of the Youth Guides]

On the 26th of January 2009 Churchill and Hazelwood Guides made their way over to the Churchill community hall, to start the Australia Day ceremony. We started the ceremony with the colour party coming forward, this year I got out of colour party and instead I took some magnificent photos. The colour party then had to raise the flag (Although they only had to do was pull a string to release the flag). After the flag got put up we sang the Australian National Anthem.

Following a different route to…

Some very important decissions to be made each time the planning of the Rac Wac (Race around Churchill, Walk around Churchill) is underway is:

a) Where is the starting point,

b) What is the destination

c) Time of day to start, d) theme of day,

e) Mode of transport available (feet or wheels?)

f) Family event, district event or just Guides and Leaders?

g) What are the Occupational, Health and Safety requirements,

h) Is each patrol following a different route to an appropriate destination ( accompanied by an adult with first aid kit and a car) or are the whole lot going together to the end destination?

i) Costs involved?

j) What are the S.W.O.T. things to consider?

K) Menu and allergies to foods.

Using the ‘My body belongs to me ‘ article.

Have the Guides sit in a circle so that they are comfortable. Explain to the Guides that a discussion about the safety of their own body will be following. Guides who feel uncomfortable are allowed to leave the circle and complete the other activities around the room.  This is an important step in allowing the Guides to feel safe.

Ask the Guides to write on a name tag their own first name.   Ask each Guide to say their own name. ..then to show their name tag.

My body belongs to (name)

With the following discussion topics each Guide is allowed not to talk about herself but to join in on a general line of thought.  We found that it had to be said in the beginning that the discussion could only be about themselves or in general [as in what was on the news, in the newspaper, and in magazines]as otherwise the discussion would be a ‘gossip’ time.

  • I have a right to feel safe ALL the time. If a bigger person is making me feel unsafe or is touching me in a way I don’t feel comfortable about I can say, “NO. Stop that”, even if the person is someone I know.
  • I don’t always have to do what a bigger person wants me to do! It’s okay to make a fuss.
  • I like feeling SAFE
  • I have the right to feel safe and be safe all the time.
  • My body belongs to me. No one has the right to touch me in ways that make me feel uncomfortable or unsafe.
  • Secrets that make me feel unsafe don’t have to be kept.
  • Nothing is so awful I can’t tell someone about it.

The discussion may not cover all topics above.  The answers may surprise you. There were some really positive aspects of the Guides thinking come out of this  discussion. We used this topic as a way of relating the Guides Promise and Law to each Guide growing stronger in their own understanding of themselves.

Settling in at Gallipoli

  1. Have the Guides find out what a Periscope, a ballista and what other firing devises for shells were used during the First World War. Or have on display diagrams for their construction.
  2. Dig your trench using sheets, blankets, boxes or anything else suitable.
  3. Using a paper tube and mirrors make a periscope.
  4. Work with a Patrol to make a ballista, trebucket or other devise from which to fire shells – water bombs.

This A.N.Z.A.C. wide game activity has many uses.  Although Guides looks for peaceful ways of resolving conflict this is not to say that Guides cannot be a) inventive and b) gain a basic understanding of what ‘man’ has invented in order to force another into submission statis.

Really good when dad’s come to Guide Family days and try and compete with the Guides.  Never quite sure whose won on these days but makes a lot of laughs as the adults try and out do the Guides.  Then of course you have partners and the opposite sex adults trying to out do each other as well.

An A.N.Z.A.C. Experience Wide Game

The objective of this wide game is to teach the Guides something about what preparation the soldiers had on their way to Gallipoli during the First World War. The wide game itself was set out through the Guiding in Australia Magazine.

Since the soldiers traveled by sea their trainings had to carry on throughout the long weeks of the trip. So certain skills were practiced through out this time.

Pre teach the following skills to the Guides in the lead up to the Wide Game time.

  • Understand what the A.N.Z.A.C. acronym stands for.  What did the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps do?
  • Practice Semaphore and Morse Code.
  • Knots using square knots to make things.
  • First Aid and Slings.
  • Knots and lashings to make stretchers.
  • Pre-cook A.N.Z.A.C. biscuits
  • Learn how to make billy tea.

The wide game consists of the following Activities.

  1. Patrols aboard ship and Prepare for sailing.
  2. Staying fit whist on the ship
  3. Arrival at Mena Camp in Egypt.
  4. Further preperations for Turkey
  5. Landing at Galliopli.
  6. Settling in at Galliopli
  7. Surviving the trenches
  8. Decoy cricket
  9. Evacuation to Egypt.
  10. Back in Australia Now.

Balloon basket ball

Balloon basket ball is a noisy fun game.

Two equal teams are formed.  The balloon is trown in the middle and players try to hit the balloon to their own goal.

This might be a player standing on a chair  or a piece of newspaper holding a pin!.

To score gaoler must pop balloon without getting off the chair or out of the square newspaper area.

Give it a Whirl

This is actually a fun whirly glider thing to make.  originally it came from a Guiding Australia magazine as guides through out Australia were being encouraged to fund raise for a bus so that the Kiribati Guides had transport..

Creating a front garden at the Hazelwood South Hall

The Hazelwood South Hall entrance looks uncared for. So what if we all spend a little time sprucing this area up?

A Saturday has been put aside so that the tan bark that has been donated for the Hall use combined with some of the bricks from the back of the Hall used as an edging for two little gardens can be created.

So how about making this a District family event occurring on the 3rd of April 2010.

Venue – Hazelwood South Hall, 762 Tramway Road Churchill Victoria 3842

Start time 9 oclock – finish at lunch time.  Your family will need tools like wheel barrows, gloves, shovels, buckets and garden forks.

Living a Healthy Active Lifestyle

In the Centenary Challenge Badge there is a light blue section that requires a new physical skill  that some of the Guide participated in was a Night Penny Hike.

The  instructions  given included road sense, tossing the coin, walking together, using a torch..

Since most of the guides participating were not comfortable with walking through parks, near roads, and across traffic during the dark hours this night penny hike was a challenge.  Although not totally enjoying the Dark the Guides are a little more comfortable when walking in a group at night.

Other active games played with friends have been the water game, soccer, making bubbles.

Reading about the influence of Girl Guide movement

Once upon a time in a far off land lived five little girls. One girl was a Moslem, another was Buddhist, the third was Jewish, the fourth a Christian and the fifth was a Hindu. The girls were friends but they had to meet in secret because their fami­lies distrusted people who had cus­toms different from their own. Their families did not really understand that the girls liked each other and wanted to be friends.

One day news came about an elderly man in a far off country who had started something called Girl Guides, and now a unit was starting in their area. The five girls were very excited because they were able to join Brownie Guides together. They, like guides all over the world today, had different religions and beliefs but were able to meet together in friendship because all Guides existed happily together. -Their families were happy to see the girls together in Guiding because it was a good thing.

As the years passed the girls grew up and were young women when war came to their land. They were very afraid because people with dif­ferent beliefs were fighting with each other. Our five Guides were very troubled until one of them said “We are different but we are the same. We are sister Guides and we always help one another in times of need.”

And so, our five young women and their families promoted peace in their land and grew to understand and accept each others customs.

The five young girls in this story now have children of their own. Their children play together happily today, all because the Girl Guides came to their land a long time ago.
