Preparing a camp fire

Choose a theme and sort out the camp fire program 

  • Learn the song selection [at least be familiar with.]
  • My favorite camp things
  • What about using the Yells, Chants, and camp fire games?

Know the campfire and flame safety rules.

Practice with marshmallows and candle.

Have activities in the dark.

Have alternatives for bad weather.

Make equipment to use at campfire

  • Notice board with emergency assembly area on display
  • Sign in / sign out book.
  • Campfire song book each member.
  • Making an entrance.
  • Marsh mellow sticks.
  • Water buckets.
  •  Camp Blanket.
  • Woodpile – graded.
  • Musical instruments
  • What about the campfire too?

Now just who is the target audience for this campfire.  Just the Guides as part of their program or a camp? Or the Unit or Adults such as the Gipps Guides too?  To be inclusive of friends and family? As a District event that is target to what audience.  The combination of the talents and skills learned by those preparing the campfire suggestions / evaluations made before, and who the target audience is strongly reflects the planning and management of the campfire.

Keeping skipping ropes tidy and safely away.

Our Guides often enjoy the use of a skipping rope rope.  The ropes are often used to tie things together, for a skipping activity, play snakes and other jump activities with while also learning to tie knots with and so on.

When the Guides have finished skipping they are meant to tie the rope up in a double overhand.  This care means that the rope is stored in such a way that when they rush to get the ropes out for the next activity the Guides can go straight into that activity  with out having to spend extra time unravelling the ropes. However the best way of making sure that everyone knows how to tie the ropes in a double overhand, and will enforce the tieing of the ropes up after an activity, is when the ropes are ‘found’ to have been uncared for and stored lazily away run the activity again the next week using the same ropes.  All the Guides must then work to unravel, retie the ropes and store away before the activity will commence.  The Guides soon learn to take a collective time out at the end of the game/ activity just to put the ropes back properly.

The Pioneer camp

By the time the Guides had finished practising the knots that they wanted to learn how to tie a great many had been left to learn at a later date.

The fact that the Guide were also organising a Pioneer camp should have warned the leaders what might have been forming in the Guides minds. You got it they were going to put their knots into practice and make an obsticale course while at camp. So a great deal of time was put aside learning the knots, whipping, splicing and other rope work involved in making gadgets, equipment and used in safety measures.

The Leaders paper work was up to date.The menu and rules had been created by the guides.  A Guides own organised, a campfire prepared, a night hike [complete with spooky animal noises and torches].  Camp duties and camp Patrols were up on the notice board. Along with the fire drills and emergency evacuation procedures.

As the pioneer camp drew nearer the equipment had to be sorted, the tents organised, along with the cooking equipment, Camp and Unit flags made. The World Guide Flag was packed to be taken as well. The program had been sorted out, transport arranged and food was purchased.  The camp site at Burnett Park was checked and where the camp would actually take place was arranged.  All was set.

There were a few surprises going to take place though.

Following a different route to…

Some very important decissions to be made each time the planning of the Rac Wac (Race around Churchill, Walk around Churchill) is underway is:

a) Where is the starting point,

b) What is the destination

c) Time of day to start, d) theme of day,

e) Mode of transport available (feet or wheels?)

f) Family event, district event or just Guides and Leaders?

g) What are the Occupational, Health and Safety requirements,

h) Is each patrol following a different route to an appropriate destination ( accompanied by an adult with first aid kit and a car) or are the whole lot going together to the end destination?

i) Costs involved?

j) What are the S.W.O.T. things to consider?

K) Menu and allergies to foods.

Did you know Big sea animals info

When Guides was looking into the Sea Animals the following information was put forward from somewhere.  The younger  Guides found that the information was hard to figure out number wise.  So we filled a jar with hundreds and thousands and spread these all over the floor.  Interestingly the Guides insisted that the blue ones were Dolphins, red ones for the Hourglass Whale and the yellow ones Minke Whales.  Collecting just their chosen animal [ that color H & T] they tried to save their animal before the their existence was swept aside [ clean up with the brush and shovel].  Eventually one of the older Guides got out the vacuum cleaner and said ‘mans inventions poison the world’.  So doing turned on the vacuum and cleaned the floor.  The problem remained of what to do with the ‘saved’ mammals.

• The humpback whale lives in the Antarctic as well as throughout the world’s seas? Their length ranges from 14 to over 15 metres and they weigh 30,000 to 40,000 kilograms.

• The hourglass dolphin mainly lives in waters with a temperature of less than five degrees centigrade. It has a distinctive black and white pattern.’

• Minke whales can be found in large groups of up to 1,000 in the Antarctic waters. They can also be found worldwide but rarely in tropical waters. These whales are bluish-grey in colour and grow up to eight metres in length and normally weigh between 5,800 and 7,250 kilograms.

• The killer whale occurs worldwide, preferring coastal areas and cooler waters. Their colour is basically black and white and they are distinguished by a tall fin. They feed on warm­blooded prey such as birds and seals.

The Guides who did this activity have grown up now.  Recently one of them sent a connection via face book re dolphin killing.  It has been good to see that what she was introduced to has remained a factor within her current adult life.

Using the ‘My body belongs to me ‘ article.

Have the Guides sit in a circle so that they are comfortable. Explain to the Guides that a discussion about the safety of their own body will be following. Guides who feel uncomfortable are allowed to leave the circle and complete the other activities around the room.  This is an important step in allowing the Guides to feel safe.

Ask the Guides to write on a name tag their own first name.   Ask each Guide to say their own name. ..then to show their name tag.

My body belongs to (name)

With the following discussion topics each Guide is allowed not to talk about herself but to join in on a general line of thought.  We found that it had to be said in the beginning that the discussion could only be about themselves or in general [as in what was on the news, in the newspaper, and in magazines]as otherwise the discussion would be a ‘gossip’ time.

  • I have a right to feel safe ALL the time. If a bigger person is making me feel unsafe or is touching me in a way I don’t feel comfortable about I can say, “NO. Stop that”, even if the person is someone I know.
  • I don’t always have to do what a bigger person wants me to do! It’s okay to make a fuss.
  • I like feeling SAFE
  • I have the right to feel safe and be safe all the time.
  • My body belongs to me. No one has the right to touch me in ways that make me feel uncomfortable or unsafe.
  • Secrets that make me feel unsafe don’t have to be kept.
  • Nothing is so awful I can’t tell someone about it.

The discussion may not cover all topics above.  The answers may surprise you. There were some really positive aspects of the Guides thinking come out of this  discussion. We used this topic as a way of relating the Guides Promise and Law to each Guide growing stronger in their own understanding of themselves.

Settling in at Gallipoli

  1. Have the Guides find out what a Periscope, a ballista and what other firing devises for shells were used during the First World War. Or have on display diagrams for their construction.
  2. Dig your trench using sheets, blankets, boxes or anything else suitable.
  3. Using a paper tube and mirrors make a periscope.
  4. Work with a Patrol to make a ballista, trebucket or other devise from which to fire shells – water bombs.

This A.N.Z.A.C. wide game activity has many uses.  Although Guides looks for peaceful ways of resolving conflict this is not to say that Guides cannot be a) inventive and b) gain a basic understanding of what ‘man’ has invented in order to force another into submission statis.

Really good when dad’s come to Guide Family days and try and compete with the Guides.  Never quite sure whose won on these days but makes a lot of laughs as the adults try and out do the Guides.  Then of course you have partners and the opposite sex adults trying to out do each other as well.

An A.N.Z.A.C. Experience Wide Game

The objective of this wide game is to teach the Guides something about what preparation the soldiers had on their way to Gallipoli during the First World War. The wide game itself was set out through the Guiding in Australia Magazine.

Since the soldiers traveled by sea their trainings had to carry on throughout the long weeks of the trip. So certain skills were practiced through out this time.

Pre teach the following skills to the Guides in the lead up to the Wide Game time.

  • Understand what the A.N.Z.A.C. acronym stands for.  What did the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps do?
  • Practice Semaphore and Morse Code.
  • Knots using square knots to make things.
  • First Aid and Slings.
  • Knots and lashings to make stretchers.
  • Pre-cook A.N.Z.A.C. biscuits
  • Learn how to make billy tea.

The wide game consists of the following Activities.

  1. Patrols aboard ship and Prepare for sailing.
  2. Staying fit whist on the ship
  3. Arrival at Mena Camp in Egypt.
  4. Further preperations for Turkey
  5. Landing at Galliopli.
  6. Settling in at Galliopli
  7. Surviving the trenches
  8. Decoy cricket
  9. Evacuation to Egypt.
  10. Back in Australia Now.
