Hazelwood and Churchill (Victoria, Australia) local Girl Guide information noticeboard.

patrol Activity through the Rac Wac’s.

Sometimes when the Rac Wac has been planned the idea was that:

Each patrol was to follow a different route to an appropriate destination ( accompanied by an adult with first aid kit and a car).  The year that we were to try this out everything was cancelled, delayed or rearranged due to the Fires that were / had been ranging around Churchill for nearly a month.

Family BBQ’s are just for fun

A few years ago the Units held Family get together’s.  This meant that the parents could meat and great each other.  Instead of being so and so’s mum or dad they met someone with a name!

These Family BBQ’s were quite successful for a while.  Being run once every two terms proved better than every term.  So in the middle of the first and third terms a night was chosen and things were arranged.

  • Advocacy, Governance and ownership by all levels of Guiding within this District.
  • No special agenda just good food and friendship.  Not a political evening. But a good way of quietly providing an avenue where parents and friends could be included and of assistance.
  • The Guides who could attend had an increase in their self confidence as their parents and families are important enough to be invited and come to a District function.  The mind set of having parents involved offered a protection around the guides attending.
  • The Guides attending quietly showcased their talents and skills learned through the night.
  • Risk annalysises were completed
  • Hostessed by the District Leader and the District team divided the work load.  Of course offers of help were taken up be they from Guides, the parents or family friends.
  • The District Team got together to divided the jobs.
  • Invites were sent out one month in advance.
  • The RSPA was two weeks before the date set.
  • Parents received reminder notices via face book and twitter as the evening approached..
  • Membership tended to increase as the public interest hightened.

Clean Up Australia

The actual Clean Up Australia national cleaning day lands on what ever the 1st Sunday of March each year is.

Traditionally the Hazelwood and Churchill Girl Guides have concentrated their efforts either around the Glendonald Park [the playground and BBQ area] or the Hazelwood South Hall.

Over the years it was found that the youngest Guides got easily bored with the whole thing after about one half hour.  The older Guides got distracted after about one to one and a half hours.  So now there is a flip side to the service activity.

Coinsiding with the day is a Teddy Bears Picnic and Activities in the Park (about one hour worth).  Usually the Teddy Bears picnic starts at just after morning tea time.  And the Activities begin about three quarters of an hour later.  This way the youngest ones can go back to cleaning up the Park or just progressively make their way over to the Activities in the Park.

Needless to say to have these activities going on there needs to be Adult volunteers.  Please feel free to speak to the District Leader and ask for the necessary plans, paperwork and other District Team Members participation schedules.

Catching up on all these activities might be easier when you are invited to ‘meet’ with others with the District Facebook group.

Fun Walk

Rather than having a ‘fun run’ there was more interest in a ‘fun walk to the Hazelwood Pondage’. Complete with BBQ. Involve the kids and family members.

Jess and Kira to organise this day for June 2010.

Fundraising and Bunnings

Jane, Region Leader, was kept informed with a list of what topics were up for discussion. Jane suggested that the Gipps Guides contact Barbara from the Burnett Park Committee as they already have access to Bunnings BBQ’s spots. They also have food handlers available all day when need on the day. Therefore by working together the Gipps Guides halve the load. Also by working together a ‘United’ front is achieved, you get to know whose who, they get to know you, and work on barriers is achieved. Another side effect is a wider window of opportunity for links from the youth sector into the Gipp’s Guide Unit.

Not sure what happens to the money raised but to be discussed between Barbara and Rebecca.
