Were going to be at Churchill Festival 2010

Every two years Churchill has a festival.  Except for really bad weather the Hazelwood and Churchill Guides have attended this festival over the past twenty odd years that I know off.  There have been so many different things that the District Guides have done.  Each Festival is a different challenge. The same was apparent for this 2010 one as well.

This years festival was in some doubt re the continuance but local business have supported the organising committee.  unfortunately the dates changed.  So many organisations were thrown into disarray re their own appearance.    One such group was the Walker Street playground group.  Which the District leader met when the a presentation was put forward by the Walker Street Playground group at a Churchill District Community Development meeting [CDCA].

The District Leader made a suggestion that the Walker Street playground group conduct a survey of the youth of Churchill as to what they actually wanted to see happen to this land.  There were two challenges apparent.  The most pressing was the actual asking of the children. Not really an acceptable thing these days in Australia where a grown older man approaches the child.  So the District Leader suggested that the Guides of Hazelwood and Churchill do this as a service to their community.  Since the Churchill festival is approaching and the District was attending where there would be children we would make a simple survey and the Guides could ask the questions.  relief on the Walker Street playground mens faces was very apparent.

The Guides have been told of the rules and guidelines this service concept has been given. They are looking forward to the service.  How many friends and people out there do they know.

Over the last few months the Youth members have concentrated on the one hundred year Girl Guide celebrations. Working through different syllabus  aspects, combined with several other themes such as World Thinking day, the History of Guiding, the food and the Guides Four World Centers.  The last meeting we all went over which badges from the first term this year they have actually completed through the Guiding programs.  Some have realised that there were challenges outside of the meeting times.  These challenges count too.  But hay they are unable to receive, sew and wear these badges on the Churchill Festival day.

Not to worry the District leader has said wear no uniform.  No sash, shirt etc.  Dress to the occasion.  The Unit scarves will be supplied for the day.  Why?  When people approach others with a clip board the other person automatically feels vonerable and will put up defenses such as shyness, and an unwillingness to answer questions.  To overcome this no uniform is to be worn…just the scarf…. and a smile on their face and in their voice.

Designated boundaries are to be set.  he adult will be very near by within the specified area. This year our shelter will be the Kitchen fly.  Identifiable by the three flags that will be attached.  The area that the Guides may question the children in is from the front of the three flags.  If the adults at the base cannot see the Guides and their adult then they will be contacted via phone and the request will be made to come back to base. NOW.

Each small group of questioners will have a clip board and pen, a thank-you note which will have an invitation to the Guides Disco that they are planning on the 15th May 2010.  The age group the disco  invitations are aimed at are for the five to ten year olds. Primarily the females – who may bring their friends. The older target girls will be invited to another Disco for their age group when the older Guides begin an a Wednesday evening later in the term. Note we are not turning this age group down though!.

The idea for the Disco invitations came about as the Guides were wondering what the word promote Guiding meant.  Asked what made them realise that Guiding was not so scary most  answered that they had come to a Disco. One said she had promoted Guides through having a CD evening.  So disco was what we would have again this time as well as after the disco up by having a CD evening later this term.

There are other activities that both the Region, the District, the Leaders and then also the Youth are organising through out this years program.

While at the Churchill Festival, from the base shelter, simple painting crafts are on offer for painting.  Again an invitation will be included. The invitations are printed with a RSVP of the whynotgirlguides@gmail.com address and Susan’s – the District Leaders and Debbie’s a Unit Leader phone number.

Family BBQ’s are just for fun

A few years ago the Units held Family get together’s.  This meant that the parents could meat and great each other.  Instead of being so and so’s mum or dad they met someone with a name!

These Family BBQ’s were quite successful for a while.  Being run once every two terms proved better than every term.  So in the middle of the first and third terms a night was chosen and things were arranged.

  • Advocacy, Governance and ownership by all levels of Guiding within this District.
  • No special agenda just good food and friendship.  Not a political evening. But a good way of quietly providing an avenue where parents and friends could be included and of assistance.
  • The Guides who could attend had an increase in their self confidence as their parents and families are important enough to be invited and come to a District function.  The mind set of having parents involved offered a protection around the guides attending.
  • The Guides attending quietly showcased their talents and skills learned through the night.
  • Risk annalysises were completed
  • Hostessed by the District Leader and the District team divided the work load.  Of course offers of help were taken up be they from Guides, the parents or family friends.
  • The District Team got together to divided the jobs.
  • Invites were sent out one month in advance.
  • The RSPA was two weeks before the date set.
  • Parents received reminder notices via face book and twitter as the evening approached..
  • Membership tended to increase as the public interest hightened.

When planning 2009 Tuesday program the girls decided to invite the CFA people to Guides. Little knowing that every one here would be so affected by the near by fires over the last two weeks.

Outcomes from the overnight stay [Food and Four World Centers]

  1. Governance practiced in situations where the Guides begin to understand their roles, how governance occurs, the implications of Governance
  2. Structuring the Guides in their own Patrols so that they are comfortable to allow Advocacy has occurred.
  3. What is a Patrol Activity is becoming clearer to the Guides.
  4. Leadership under different situations occurred.
  5. Recognition of each guides potential is being gained by the Guide herself, those Guides around her and the friends and family.
  6. Life skills are being recognised as needed, looked for and fulfilled to each Guides individual pace.
  7. Seeking out information skills has begun.
  8. Joining the library as members.
  9. Identity issues are still being worked on.
  10. Badges, and other rewards and recognitions for a job being attempted, roll being taken on , skill learned are appreciated.

Objectives of Overnight stay [food and Four World Centers]

  • for each Guide involved with the pre-camp and the overnight experiences to get something personally special out of this overnight stay.
  • to provide a range of pre-camp training is part of, and an extension too, the general weekly Guide Program.
  • to encourage and strengthen team work and leadership potential factors within each of the Guide members.
  • to accumulate a mass of skills as part of a ‘whole package’  which will be in action during the overnight stay.
  • to widen to members understanding of the Promise and Law concept within the Australian Girl Guides Elements and Fundamentals.
  • to reintroduce traditions of the Hazelwood and Churchill Guide District.
  • to have a safe and happy camp full of positive experiences and memories.
  • to solidity the knowledge that the Guides have gained by allowing opportunities to incorporate this knowledge and skills into action.to face and begin to overcome fears in a protected friendly environment.
  • no to be in debt because of the overnight stay experiences.
  • To offer as many Hazelwood and Churchill Girl Guides as possible these experiences.
  • to successfully use the evaluations as the basis of the next terms programing and overnight stay plans.

Guides find out about the ‘Hub’ in Churchill.

The Churchill Hub is a fairly new building on Philip parade, Churchill, Victoria,  Australia.  Their are many services run through this building.  What we found was that many people did not know that it was not only just a place to pay their Latrobe City Councils bills, or to drop off the children at the day care end, even to go to the classes run through the Churchill Neighborhood Center.

The Churchill Library is only a small library.  However the service is part of the Latrobe Valley library service.  So one card does four library services.  The Guides have found that there are books, videos and C.Ds that interest them .  As such there is space in which to read, or just spend time alone.

The Churchill Neighborhood center has various classes run at all sorts of times.

There are also facilities for a community kitchen group.

Overnight stay.

WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW,,,,,,,,, THAT THE GUIDES HAVE PLANNED TO DO leading up to April 8/9th 2010..

  1. Over night stay  starts 1pm on the 8th and finishes 1pm on the 9th April 2010.
  2. The Hazelwood South Hall is at  790 Tramway Road, Churchill.
  3. Cost: $200.00 per participant.
  4. Theme: Food and Exploration of the Four World Centers.
  5. Participate in the pre-camp /over night activities where able in a District, Unit or Patrol Activity situation.
  6. Overnight stay colors organised.
  7. The overall Program is comleted.
  8. Sleeping accomadation:  Self standing tents …erected inside the Hazelwood South Hall. District owns these tents.
  9. Kit list  to be printed out for next week. Guides to get used to packing their own bag please.
  10. Each Guides own camp teddy not to be any bigger than the width of her hand.  Space on/in her kit bag is at a primium.
  11. Guides have worked out the duty rosters.
  12. Menu has been organised.
  13. First aid kit has been sorted out.
  14. Program been organised (yes) and is full of potential activities.
  15. Guides Promise to be made
  16. Older Patrol to meet at Churchill Shopping center for Quarter Master shopping list requirements.

Creating a Patrol Corner

While the Guides are learning about Patrols they are practising their Leadership skills. Although not all the Guides make it every night so quite often the others fill them in. So far this is where they are at.

The Guides are creating their Patrol corner.  Learning how governance works, participating in creating their identity, and imprinting this identity on what they do and who they are.

First off came the getting to know one another, then the taking responsibility for your actions and recently the making of the patrols.  Then the choosing of Patrol Leaders and Seconders.  Learning and practising the listening to your Patrol members was an important issue.

Last night some of  the younger Patrol of Guides had arrived on time. A challenge was given to them.  Did they want to make a patrol Corner. Then make a Patrol Corner. Ahh Delegation is wonderful.So they got to work out where the Patrol Corner was to be. This reward was a decision made by the Leaders in recognition of these Guides arriving on time.

Keeping this corner clean and tidy is a Patrol responsibility. House keeping skills came into practice. While some of the Guides rolled up the carpet, others swept and then vaccumed the Patrol corner.

What furniture was to go where. Were they going to have flags there, which flags and where the flags would go.  What about utilizing one of the notice boards that was already on the wall.   While working on all this what was the World Guide Flag, and which of the three identifying unit flags they would rally under as a Patrol.

The area chosen is the furtherest away from both sets of exit doors, the kitchen and the heater, but next to the storage cupboards.  There was an old two meter bench thing with cupboard they asked for help to move to the other side of the Patrol corner. This has two shelve in hight but three spaces in length.

Okay, they took stuff from the cupboards and placed some things on the shelves.  The middle one being a combined area of stuff.  When the Guides were going through the storage cupboards they realised that there was heaps of stuff there.  Asking what they could take out we advised caution on quantity of ‘stuff” going on the benches.  Realising that all they had to do was ask and the key would be provided to open the storage cupboard the wooden shelves have a minimal amount of items on them.  things lie some jig-saw puzzles, pens, crayons, scrap paper.  Even pencil sharpners were found.

As Patrols they have Patrol books that they can record what they are doing in it.  These Patrol Books they used later with a Kim’s game that was played. There was a ‘weekly record book’ book from a few years back that one guide saw but I think it was put back into the cupboard.  When the guides are ready they will probably recycle or make their own ‘weekly’ record  book.

The tables have chairs there and now a table cloth on top. A new purple plastic one that covers both.  May have to purchase another couple for when more tables are used there though. But this decision will be there to make and to fund raise for.

The animal mobile that was made last year which is still hanging above the two tables ,  The combined choice is to leave it there.

Then they found out that there was an unlocked two shelve, glass cabinet, high up on the wall. From memory some of the ordinments that previous Guides have purchased are now in there.  They are dolphins swimming , a koala on a branch, a girl on a purple chair.

Yes to the notice board.  No to what was already there. When what was to go on the notice board was worked out a strong personality was over riding the others.  This was worked out with a Patrol Leader from one and a Patrol Second from another Patrol holding up posters and signs.  Where to best place these was decided by the others win the Patrols standing by the furtherest away from the notice board.

The establishment of this Patrol corner has been important in the practice of governance and having a voice in your Patrols Identity.
