Hazelwood and Churchill (Victoria, Australia) local Girl Guide information noticeboard.

Outcomes of the external toilet block being demolished.

  1. Many volunteers have lent their support to the demolishion and removal of the external toilet block.
  2. Some business have donated their labor costs for the same.
  3. Upfront cash donation to Hazelwood and Churchill Guide District $2220.00 [broken into $80.00 for electrician to disconnect the outside light attached to the external toilet walls, $290.00 for the plumber to find and cap the galvinised water pipe, $700.00 for demolision, $650.00 off unit costs and $500.00 for slacking of bricks.
  4. Further running costs were to support refreshments and food for volunteers doing various odd jobs around the removal of mortar from the bricks.
  5. Complaints from the Churchill Soccer Club re loss of use old the external toilet block facilities.
  6. Complaints directed via Latrobe City Council from a near by farmer and different members of the Churchill Soccer Club re the children from the Churchill Soccer Club playing on the stacked bricks.
  7. Stacked bricks being mysteriously knocked over and dislodged from stacked pile.
  8. As it turns out the Ideas for extension plans that were drawn up are currently a no hoper.  There is too many steps for the few volunteers to tackle the Latrobe City Council so other these plans have had to be sidelined for a few years.
  9. The inability to properly maintain the area around the ‘piles’of bricks.
  10. Recycling the of the bricks for pathways, BBQ’s, garden walls, compost storage, garden boarders.
  11. Our old ‘closed off’ septic storage location was found on the Hazelwood South Reserve.
  12. Reusing the old external toilet block concrete slab for a base of  the ‘gorilla garden’.
  13. Weight loss and exercise!  There was lots of swinging the arms etc when moving the bricks.
  14. Extension of job for the morning tea sub-committee…. oh lunch was beautiful.. and much needed too.
  15. Different hazelwood South Hall fundraising projects have been aired and taken on.
  16. Volunteer audit has begun via Guide Centre in 2010.
  17. Rubbish removal by volunteers occurred several times.
  18. The donated tan bark has been used between the front entrances and the “brickery” construction.
  19. The old carpet previously stored in the external toilets was recycled.
  20. A small Jerry can of petrol was found in the bushes and given to the District Leader for safe keeping.
  21. The front entrances to the Hazelwood South Hall have been created.
  22. the community garden idea has become a ‘Why don’t we plant herbs” idea.
  23. A ‘brickery’ has been built [allias Gorilla garden]
  24. Frogs saved and relocated.
  25. The standards for the maintenance of the Hazelwood South Hall are easier to want to be kept. The front and the back already look good so it makes it easier to keep looking good.
  26. Native tree line along the boundary between the Hazelwood South Hall and the Hazelwood South Reserve will gradually begin.
  27. The SWOT of the Hazelwood South Hall has altered .  The Brickery and the front entrances have moved into the Strength and Opportunity boxes.
  28. Some of the objectives from the upgrading of the Hazelwood and Churchill District guides have occurred.

Creating a grand entrance!

The Hazelwood South Hall has a new look outside front entrance way.  While we wait with baited breath for the Latrobe City Council to spend millions on creating a side car entrance for members of the Churchill Soccer club which will take away a lot of parking and some of the Hazelwood South Reserve our own Hall entrance really began to look shabby. like the District needing revitalization this entrance desperately required upgrading.

Earlier when a District SWOT was compiled this front entrance, and that fact that the bricks were still out the back were considered both a weakness and a threat. The better bricks have been gradually leaving the area out the back. Surely even if we could not use these bricks for what the District Team originally envisioned there must have been something we could do with them around the Hazelwood South Hall!

When a new member of the District Team wanted to use the Hall it was suggested that something be done with the front entrance. What was envisioned had to to be place on a back burner. The team was stuck while other thing to over.  A light bulb flash of inspiration occurred.

There was an opportunity to use the bricks as well as the tan bark that had been donated earlier in the year.  Some members of the District team were available to load up wheel barrows with bricks, while one member chipped away at the mortar still on most of the bricks. Mean while others dug up and loaded the wheelbarrows with the tan bark.

Years ago a rose bush was planted by the Hazelwood Junior Guide  Unit in memory of Lady B-P. This rose bush has grown well and gets ‘trimmed’ vigoursly right back every few years.  Having just one large rose bush gives the entrance a lopsided feel. This rose bush, which  had previously been trimmed back a few weeks ago, got another trim.  Now we able to get in and more easily place the tan bark at the back of the rose as well.

Thanks to another member who went shopping in a nursery there are now two little plants growing there too.

That’s when the grand idea for a ‘brickery’ came up.  We’ll we don’t have rocks but there are a lot of old chipped bricks and mortar, good bricks still from the old toilet block and lots more wheel barrows of tan bark.  most of us have the plants at home for propagation.  Well developing  the ‘brickery’ is another story…

Creating a front garden at the Hazelwood South Hall

The Hazelwood South Hall entrance looks uncared for. So what if we all spend a little time sprucing this area up?

A Saturday has been put aside so that the tan bark that has been donated for the Hall use combined with some of the bricks from the back of the Hall used as an edging for two little gardens can be created.

So how about making this a District family event occurring on the 3rd of April 2010.

Start time 9 oclock – finish at lunch time.  Your family will need tools like wheel barrows, gloves, shovels, buckets and garden forks.

Revitalizing the Hazelwood and Churchill Guide District

A few years ago the Hazelwood and Churchill District was holding on for dear life.

The Leaders knew that Guiding offered so much to so many people. But the challenges were more than low, continuously changing membership within the District.

But how to revitalize the membership that was experiencing low energy levels which in turn created more problems such as a sense of uncertainty. People were busy.  In this area family commitments, job and TV held peoples attention so adding to these was a major want. Finding the “sell” feature a major challenge.

One major challenge was the major gap in Leadership of the actual District.  The position of Region Leader was  filled. The only person at the time in the District able to take on the position of District Leader was impressed with the new Region Leader. So  this leader put her name forward and was voted as District Leader.

The challenge was to overcome the negative people factors and somehow bring out the best in people. Effectively setting up and developing a management system that was functional, rewarding and manageable, but owned by the people involved directly with the Hazelwood and Churchill Guide District was achievable, but would take time. was time going to be an ally… a good question posed that needed answers quickly. Then came the changes on a management level within the District.  The changes needed to come in but they the changes also needed to be understood well by all and actually supported.  Guides Victoria began handing over the reins to the Younger adult members around 2000.  These members were assisted in there management skills , supported and encouraged with making a go of it. So the Gipps Guides are among other team members creating intergrated Subcommittees and getting on with ‘it’. One such subcommittee is the Jump-Rope-for Heart activity one.

The management of the District was formalised so that  SWOT’s and Risk analysis had to be done. Through District Leaders meetings items discussed previously were formalized.   The District assets were relooked at. For in stance how was the lease on the Hazelwood South Hall  and the challenges associated with this hall  and its maintenance an asset?

There is so much to offer the members within Guiding that each Leader was given a job to do meaning that each leader is asked to organise one event, service or activity. Different lists were drawn up and a selection was offered. There are different levels of activity available.  Some are aimed at families, others at the District team,  Full member ship that may be Leaders, Unit Helpers and Youth or just at the Youth Member Level.

In order to achieve the challenge give she must work with a sub-committee. reporting to through either the District Leaders or team meetings or the Gipps Guides meetings. Effectively shortening the duration of both minutes taken along with the meetings length while widening the scope of the meetings. The sub committee may consist of outside members of Guiding. May be male and female.  Even belong to other organisations.  What is to be recognized is that no one person has all the skills or networks needed. Active participation does not require tons of effort.  Just a marshaling of other peoples skills and a guidance of the delegation required. There three things are achieved.

A) the public become aware that Guiding in this District is not ‘dead’. Indeed is again beginning to flourish.

b) People gain skills and knowledge and thus self esteem levels grow.

c) Membership levels increase. Participation levels increase. Sub-committee assistance is easier as when something is alive people want to help and getting involved is helping.

d) The positive energy being directed into making things happen within the District feeds off each thing that happens. When things happen members do not feel that their input is down graded.  Uplifting occurs on many levels.

The District management was to change.  Rather than have a District support group a District Team was created.  The underpinning idea was to have positive adult input into the Guide District management.  The basis of which is that adults are the ones that okay a Youth Members Application to join Guides. If the adults in the community actually got to know who the Leaders  less negative ‘Word of Mouth’ publicity would occur.  Instead the interest in being a member of the District team would create a positive impact within the community.  The District team would organize various activities and events for other members within the community and as a level of Guiding within the District may also assist with other actual District events, service and events that families within Guiding were attending. So we started by once again having Jota/i, parades, family BB’s there.  But was this enough with the changes near the hall coming.

Logically where would the Youth Members go once they were adults.  It had been observed by the District Leader that once an eleven year old Guide had the idea formed that there was nothing after, except being a Leader, so negative concepts had a place to take root.

Concurrently, as there was a need for the District Team, there was also a need for the Olave Program to be revitalized as well.  The registered local Olave Program was known as the Gipp’s Guides. A nucleus of adults formed, a calendar was worked on, positions were worked towards. There are subcommittees being formed that deal with Uniform fundraising, jump rope for heart through the Gipp’s Guides and involving the wiser community. Members of the Gipp’s Guides are actively learning about management of people, committees and bring out the best within people as they are involving themselves in the District Sub-committees such as the Morning Tea Sub-committee. Learning by doing.  When and if these Gipps Guide’s are wanting to move into other fields or become involved with committees in either Guiding on other levels or in their wider community they will have set standards and management tools already learned and practiced. The rational of which is that in aiming for a certain set standard and achieving tangible outcomes will bring about a sense of achievement, public awareness, positive energy and pride.

The District membership had to grow. Some of the team members, leaders and the Gipps Guides brought other people into the District. Members may have had children, nieces, aunties and friends, some of which were females.  Those girls who were five and over have joined into the Youth program side of Guides.  Some of the members have answered there call to become trainee leaders.  Others have joined into the District team.  Offering help and assistance as their time, qualifications and paper work allow them to participate. Thus supporting their own partners, family members and definitely their daughters within this District’s Guiding.

So far the outcomes are supporting  the Districts objectives and five year plan.

A major challenge for the District Leader and Leaders was the revitalisation of the Youth Members thought towards themselves, their abilities and thus what and how they had belief in their actual programs.  Having the support of others on the District , their Parents and family members helped.  But what about their friends and peers. The main obstacle was the belief that other organisations were better was held by many in those organisations.  This was a good thing for those organisations but the influences on our District was negative.  So ownership in many small areas is a major tactic tool for advancing the Hazelwood and Churchill Guide Districts Youth Program.  Through the acceptance of ownership other things had to be understood.  Gaining this knowledge bases includes governance, making decisions, patrol system, traditions, having a voice, being creative in their approach to challenges, brainstorming, mind mapping and seeing things through til the evaluation.  Accepting things may not go well this time but theres other benefits that occur.

Family BBQ’s

Family BBQs have usually been a time of getting together so that families can just say hello to one another.  Usually held at the  Hazelwood South Hall during the third term as there is plenty of room both inside and outside of the Hall.  Great in all weather conditions.

The Hazelwood and Churchill District team organises this event.  All levels of Guiding, along with a the Family BBQ subcommittee, within the Haelwood and Churchill District have input and will be assisting on the Family BBQ evening.

As the family BBQ subcommittee has updates these will be posted on this site.  So should you want to be kept informed , have input there generally are two easy ways of doing so.  Online or personally.  RSPV via comments below. And yes we need to be aware of any dietary restrictions.

  • Treasurer : Total in District Account as of Today = $108.8.
  • another $57 odd  from Ritchies.  Thank you everyone for spending at Ritchies thus the District gets get a donation.
  • Pay truenergy. Although there is still problems with the reading of the meter board on their behalf.  Debbie is constantly rephoning with orginal numbers phoned ion and the bill is constantly being resent a second time.
  • Guide bill from November has been paid by donation.
  • Content Insurance to be paid. Write a letter to include the contents at the Office as well as Hazelwood South Hall.

      • New Leaders: have contacted Volunteer coordinator in Melbourne.  Region Leader is aware of need for more leaders so that although small the Guide meeting times will flourish.  New leaders expected to train this year and to bring through their life skills.
      • Uniform. Sizes all wrong but District Leader feels there is a need to have a fresh look as a focal point for revamping the District.  Acknowledged the difficulty of financing new uniforms for both Leaders and Guides
      • Re /Training.  First Aid is a must.
      • Guide Biscuits:  Used through guide time.
      • Jota/ Joti : Occurring again in October.  The Radio Club has applied for their own Jota call sigh for the weekend.  This year to occur on the Sunday 17th starting time is early am. Action ; keep in touch. Write information on ours2share.

Family BBQ’s are just for fun

A few years ago the Units held Family get together’s.  This meant that the parents could meat and great each other.  Instead of being so and so’s mum or dad they met someone with a name!

These Family BBQ’s were quite successful for a while.  Being run once every two terms proved better than every term.  So in the middle of the first and third terms a night was chosen and things were arranged.

  • Advocacy, Governance and ownership by all levels of Guiding within this District.
  • No special agenda just good food and friendship.  Not a political evening. But a good way of quietly providing an avenue where parents and friends could be included and of assistance.
  • The Guides who could attend had an increase in their self confidence as their parents and families are important enough to be invited and come to a District function.  The mind set of having parents involved offered a protection around the guides attending.
  • The Guides attending quietly showcased their talents and skills learned through the night.
  • Risk annalysises were completed
  • Hostessed by the District Leader and the District team divided the work load.  Of course offers of help were taken up be they from Guides, the parents or family friends.
  • The District Team got together to divided the jobs.
  • Invites were sent out one month in advance.
  • The RSPA was two weeks before the date set.
  • Parents received reminder notices via face book and twitter as the evening approached..
  • Membership tended to increase as the public interest hightened.

Darling overnight stay.

What an event.  The Guides have learned so much about themselves, their tolerances, other people, leadership and most of all what lack of sleep does to one!

I’ve even seen the  Guides working together and sharing their experiances with regard to what badges they have nearly completed.  Working together trying to finish another badge.

While preparing for the overnight stay and during the overnight stay the Guides became aware of the Patrol system.  How the Patrol System functions and what it means to be an active participant and a member of a Patrol. This has been accomplished mainly through out the previous terms activities in the Unit meetings. Some of the Guiding Traditions and skills were also incorporated in the weekly programs.  This overnight stay had a fair amount of just craft activities.  Since it was a State initiative then what the State wanted incorporated was included.  Craft activities were only a means for the Guides to practice their advocacy and governance skills.  Again this was Patrol building participations

The overnight stay itself represented several challenges to management. The first being reminding parents of their financial commitments with regard to paying membership and registration  to Melbourne Guide Center.

Next term I expect to see a list of badges that each girl has completed and is yet to be presented.  Along with the evidence that they have completed them of course.

Evidence… presentations of collections, photos, discussions, talks and so forth.
