Family BBQ’s are just for fun

A few years ago the Units held Family get together’s.  This meant that the parents could meat and great each other.  Instead of being so and so’s mum or dad they met someone with a name!

These Family BBQ’s were quite successful for a while.  Being run once every two terms proved better than every term.  So in the middle of the first and third terms a night was chosen and things were arranged.

  • Advocacy, Governance and ownership by all levels of Guiding within this District.
  • No special agenda just good food and friendship.  Not a political evening. But a good way of quietly providing an avenue where parents and friends could be included and of assistance.
  • The Guides who could attend had an increase in their self confidence as their parents and families are important enough to be invited and come to a District function.  The mind set of having parents involved offered a protection around the guides attending.
  • The Guides attending quietly showcased their talents and skills learned through the night.
  • Risk annalysises were completed
  • Hostessed by the District Leader and the District team divided the work load.  Of course offers of help were taken up be they from Guides, the parents or family friends.
  • The District Team got together to divided the jobs.
  • Invites were sent out one month in advance.
  • The RSPA was two weeks before the date set.
  • Parents received reminder notices via face book and twitter as the evening approached..
  • Membership tended to increase as the public interest hightened.

Hazelwood Girl Guide Support Group

Before January 2009 this group was disbanded.  The incoming Hazelwood and Churchill Girl Guide District leader preferred to work with a different method of support.  Having a District team meant that the members were not perceived as only friends and family of the current Girl Guides. The scope of membership being a larger base.  Monitored by size through the Melbourne office of Girl Guides.
Girl Guide Australia Guide lines any president or treasurer also requires a police check.  No one wanted a police check … nor these positions. Under these conditions no Support Group could operate.

different table setting to create for meals

At times we have created ourselves, or sat at professionally done table settings for different events.

These events have been at :

  • buffet meals,
  • formal table settings,
  • Japanese table settings,
  • finger food
  • smorgess board
  • hostessing by the plate and requesting refreshment types.
  • picnics formal or impromtue,
  • around campfires
  • sitting on the ground at camp

There are basic Guide traditions and ettiquete that we have shown all the Guides over time. As the Guides learn one thing another is shown. From making the table settings to suit the occasion, to how to eat, pass food, cut meat, handle knives and forks, use fingers, wash hands, communicate, basic table manners, to hosting, serving and doing the dishes.

Unit Scarves near door.

From now on when we go into Guides we get the bag of scarves and put them near the door. Then we put one on for the night. After the meeting we leave them behind near the door…but not in the bag. That way the ones worn will be washed and made ready for nest week.
Our next job is to get the Unit flag stand ready to erect the flag. The Flag pole goes in the North side of the Building. That is where the roof is highest near the office door. A compass can be used to check this out.
After Guide and before the Color Party people put their scarves away they must put the Flag and its pole and the stand away.
