There are many things unknown

Today I received an email asking that this site be looked at.  Knowing that Guiding is not a political or religious organisation I have included the site so that you may make up your own minds.

Remembering that we are born without prejudice and with an inquiring mind.  Social borders and closed minds are introduced to each of us as we learn what makes us feel safe and be safe. To keep safe impenetrable walls are erected.  Fear is the removal of that safe feeling.

Girl Guides and Girl Scouts is a World Wide Organisation that aims at bringing out and developing the best within people..  Dealing with and affecting  many peoples lives in different cultural bands. Guiding has no cultural, faith, religious, class, financial, knowledge restrictions imposed. There is the essence of the original Promise and Law as set down by our founder . With this in mind there is a story of “Five little Girls…”

Reading about the influence of Girl Guide movement

Once upon a time in a far off land lived five little girls. One girl was a Moslem, another was Buddhist, the third was Jewish, the fourth a Christian and the fifth was a Hindu. The girls were friends but they had to meet in secret because their fami­lies distrusted people who had cus­toms different from their own. Their families did not really understand that the girls liked each other and wanted to be friends.

One day news came about an elderly man in a far off country who had started something called Girl Guides, and now a unit was starting in their area. The five girls were very excited because they were able to join Brownie Guides together. They, like guides all over the world today, had different religions and beliefs but were able to meet together in friendship because all Guides existed happily together. -Their families were happy to see the girls together in Guiding because it was a good thing.

As the years passed the girls grew up and were young women when war came to their land. They were very afraid because people with dif­ferent beliefs were fighting with each other. Our five Guides were very troubled until one of them said “We are different but we are the same. We are sister Guides and we always help one another in times of need.”

And so, our five young women and their families promoted peace in their land and grew to understand and accept each others customs.

The five young girls in this story now have children of their own. Their children play together happily today, all because the Girl Guides came to their land a long time ago.

Darling overnight stay.

What an event.  The Guides have learned so much about themselves, their tolerances, other people, leadership and most of all what lack of sleep does to one!

I’ve even seen the  Guides working together and sharing their experiances with regard to what badges they have nearly completed.  Working together trying to finish another badge.

While preparing for the overnight stay and during the overnight stay the Guides became aware of the Patrol system.  How the Patrol System functions and what it means to be an active participant and a member of a Patrol. This has been accomplished mainly through out the previous terms activities in the Unit meetings. Some of the Guiding Traditions and skills were also incorporated in the weekly programs.  This overnight stay had a fair amount of just craft activities.  Since it was a State initiative then what the State wanted incorporated was included.  Craft activities were only a means for the Guides to practice their advocacy and governance skills.  Again this was Patrol building participations

The overnight stay itself represented several challenges to management. The first being reminding parents of their financial commitments with regard to paying membership and registration  to Melbourne Guide Center.

Next term I expect to see a list of badges that each girl has completed and is yet to be presented.  Along with the evidence that they have completed them of course.

Evidence… presentations of collections, photos, discussions, talks and so forth.

Heads Held High

Disabilities are many where people are concerned. How people react to their disabilities as well as how other people react and inter-react with those who have disabilities will change as knowledge and experience change both in our community, our daily situations and ourselves.

Guiding has many opportunities for both those with or without disabilities.  Learning about and exploring different aspects of disabilities helps all of us in our daily lives.  To this end always has been Service Badges that the members of guiding can work towards.  Enjoy finding out more about what and how these various badges have worked over the decades.  gain a wider knowledge of what other badges have entailed and what different generations of girl guides  have done towards earning these Service orientated badges.  Where possible follow ons have been hyper-linked for your interests.  Having a glimpes of what and where a simple service assistance has taken various Guides may help you better understand the Service components of being a Girl Guide in the Hazelwood and Churchill District Girl Guides.

Global Action Theme is known as GAT

Global Action that has been ”Changing the World’ has been happening through out Girl Guide and Girl Scout programs for over 100 years. Action themes may have occurred on a World Wide basis involving the Regions of Guiding working together through our World Association of Girl guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) right down to just an individual question,action or activity sparking off a patrol activity that may lead to an International activity.  Global Action keeps occurring on a multitude of levels within Guiding.

As the members get older sometimes they move away from Guiding as their career develops or interests evolve, or they may stay within the movement, but the essence of having experienced the GAT is there. Typically Leaders bring into Guide program what they themselves enjoyed as a Youth member as well as what their interests and life skills are now.

The essence of service is still service. Over the years many form of service have been built on.  Different badges have been provided. The Guides have worked towards these with different service awareness and methods utilized.

So how is the GAT so successful? Simple really.  WAGGGS influences to have a voice and to listen.  Then to speak out, look at root causes and do projects.  While this occurs the Guides are learning.  And the life skills and interest circles are quietly going around still into the next generations.

When planning 2009 Tuesday program the girls decided to invite the CFA people to Guides. Little knowing that every one here would be so affected by the near by fires over the last two weeks.

Such a variety of things goes into Guiding.

Guiding provides a range such a variety of things to do that what the programs actually have included into them is as varied as the both the members, the families and the outside world have influences upon the choices of activities.

For instance when a group of Guides or Leaders are heading towards a badge or qualification there are always others who, once their interest is sparked will challenge themselves to widen their horizons as well.  Other who for their own reasons go along for the ride, and still others who ‘put up with it’ so that the more interesting (to them) stuff can be done.  This ‘get in there together’ is part of being a team member, supporting others and they in turn support you.

Because of copy write laws the syllabus of each badge, award etc can not publish.  However when there are a collective of people of different ages, skills level or a variety interests being satisfied in order for that person or group of people to achieve an overall objective then different things can pop up as challenges to different people.  In short with one overall objective there are many jobs to be done.  Each job has a variety people working at different levels to finish the ‘job’ and to collectively achieve the objective.  Along the way those who already know what needs to be done in one ‘job’ may either be showing someone else, or themselves doing another job and being shown by someone else.

Learning one skill can be utilised in may different ways.  We’ll pick on ‘food’.  There are a wide variety of tasks involved with ‘food’ where both the theory and practical emphasis changes depending on the outcome.

Alright.  Food and water is in themselves part of survival.  Over a extended period of time when a Guide learns about food she learns the safety measures with food ( cleanliness, personal hygiene, cooking, storage, carrying, presentation, carrying, washing up, putting away and even choosing the food types to suit the occasion, age range, religious and dietary requirements.}

Then there’s the deciding what to have, organising the menu, suiting the occasion to the menu and the activities, raising the money for, purchasing, storage, preparation, presentation, consumption of, removal, recycling.

The ‘Food’ theme may be used towards different size and complexity of activities. Starting with just having a cooking time in the Guide Program, discovering culinary items of interest and foods from other countries, becoming aware of the multicultural input back into this county, developing a culture with guiding itself, being aware of the Four World centers, being aware of the pioneering women in History, Guiding history, Guiding ways of the future, catering for a fundraiser, a dance, a BBQ, a cookout challenge, water activities, a penny hike, …. and so on,  These smaller activities will lead onto more comprehensive objectives. Which may include… an end of year Formal meal, an overnight stay, a camp, going away on State or International camps, helping with Patrol Service activities, being part of a World Wide service activity, [ Clean Up Australia, Kiribus Bus, East Timour, national and international disaster relief teams..] and the lists just go on.

Once the interest is sparked the future may have a direction. Wow.

No, ‘Food’ does not stop here.  There are other things to consider like the jobs connecting with the above linking words.  An obvious one is leadership for the activity. Leadership is learned, practiced and known about by watching and helping others with their leadership rolls.In essence Leadership boils down to encouraging others to willingly help get the job done, while collectively forefiling needs and desires.  On a three tier level these needs and desires are your own, their own, these who attend, those who obviously benefit.  Since everyone in these levels are ‘stake holders’ then an experienced adult Leader is capable of covering all these levels with the help of her team.

Now that how food may slot into the weekly or overall Program chosen by the Guides themselves.  However there are both tangible and intangible small stepping stones are available to the members that mark each Guides progress.

Most often the skills learning when doing one thing are brought back into the guiding Program at a greater depth of knowledge practice along with a wider variety of interests being sort to be done.    While in Guiding there are many ways of widening the interest range of the Guiding members.  in itself just the broodning and deepening of the interests, skills and knowledge basis of the members within Guides is a factor of why there are a variety of things that goes into, and come out from, Guiding.

Why do Australian Young Guides salute like older Guides?

I share with you a story I was told about a a small voice that was made louder.  The story goes like this:

The little Australian Brownie Guide who wanted to know why Brownie Guides were not allowed to Salute like the Girl Guides… after all were they not Girl Guides too.  Since this happened about 1959 the effect was amazing.  Australian Brownie Guides and New Zealand Brownie Guides of the time were able to Salute with permission from the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts.  It did take time for the Voice of one Brownie Guide to travel all the way up the chain of command but it did happen.  So even small voices can be heard when they have a good advocate.

Advacy for Brunai with Asia Pacific Region Committee encouragement.

Being a member of Girl Guides you are not only given the opportunity of having a voice but shown how to as well as encouraged to use it.  this happens through out all the levels of Girl Guides.  you may be new, or in Australia only five, or be a Patrol Leader, a seconder, or have a job to do.  However everything you want to do needs to be communicated with so that others may know what it is and were you want to end up.

Remember the little Australian Brownie Guide who even small had a strong line of communication and great advocacy people.  She asked a question that people did not know the answer of and people wanted to find out the answer too.

Have a look at what has occurred on an international level with Brunai becoming a full member of Girl Guides.  A further challenge was to then get the Leaders working towards being on the international committees such as the Asia Pacific Region.
