Family BBQ’s are just for fun

A few years ago the Units held Family get together’s.  This meant that the parents could meat and great each other.  Instead of being so and so’s mum or dad they met someone with a name!

These Family BBQ’s were quite successful for a while.  Being run once every two terms proved better than every term.  So in the middle of the first and third terms a night was chosen and things were arranged.

  • Advocacy, Governance and ownership by all levels of Guiding within this District.
  • No special agenda just good food and friendship.  Not a political evening. But a good way of quietly providing an avenue where parents and friends could be included and of assistance.
  • The Guides who could attend had an increase in their self confidence as their parents and families are important enough to be invited and come to a District function.  The mind set of having parents involved offered a protection around the guides attending.
  • The Guides attending quietly showcased their talents and skills learned through the night.
  • Risk annalysises were completed
  • Hostessed by the District Leader and the District team divided the work load.  Of course offers of help were taken up be they from Guides, the parents or family friends.
  • The District Team got together to divided the jobs.
  • Invites were sent out one month in advance.
  • The RSPA was two weeks before the date set.
  • Parents received reminder notices via face book and twitter as the evening approached..
  • Membership tended to increase as the public interest hightened.

Heads Held High

Disabilities are many where people are concerned. How people react to their disabilities as well as how other people react and inter-react with those who have disabilities will change as knowledge and experience change both in our community, our daily situations and ourselves.

Guiding has many opportunities for both those with or without disabilities.  Learning about and exploring different aspects of disabilities helps all of us in our daily lives.  To this end always has been Service Badges that the members of guiding can work towards.  Enjoy finding out more about what and how these various badges have worked over the decades.  gain a wider knowledge of what other badges have entailed and what different generations of girl guides  have done towards earning these Service orientated badges.  Where possible follow ons have been hyper-linked for your interests.  Having a glimpes of what and where a simple service assistance has taken various Guides may help you better understand the Service components of being a Girl Guide in the Hazelwood and Churchill District Girl Guides.

table settings reflect the day

When you choose to have table napkins then you need something to hold them together. The use of glasses was really appreciated when we heeded off to the Italian Australian Club one year. The Guides felt that all their efforts were worth everything they had put into the day.

Other times the guides have either used a ready made napkin holder or they made their napkin holders, name cards and servietters.

The Value of Ceremonies

Ceremonies give a sense of belonging and of achievement. Be the traditional or ceremonies that the Guides have created and carried out themselves.

In order to create a ceremony the Guides first witness and learn about different ceremonies.  The Promise, Flag Protacol involving unfurling of the Flag, Flag Flying, protecting the Flag,  receiving awards are a few repeatitive ceremonies that are carried out within Guiding.

Sometimes different symbols and familiar items are among the things there when the ceremonies begin.  Things like pictures, songs, toys, teddies, seats, buildings, trees.

Unit Scarves near door.

From now on when we go into Guides we get the bag of scarves and put them near the door. Then we put one on for the night. After the meeting we leave them behind near the door…but not in the bag. That way the ones worn will be washed and made ready for nest week.
Our next job is to get the Unit flag stand ready to erect the flag. The Flag pole goes in the North side of the Building. That is where the roof is highest near the office door. A compass can be used to check this out.
After Guide and before the Color Party people put their scarves away they must put the Flag and its pole and the stand away.

Doing things

Some of the girls who came to the disco and also the dance in the third term of 2009 have joined up and are becoming Girl Guides.

When you have fun and people see that things are happening then they think it is worth it. So they too give ‘it’ a go. Then when there is more people ‘doing things’ others still want to come.

28th November 2010.

A decision was made by the guides to wear the scarves, which scarves, where to put them so they were all available as they walked in the door and what to do with them after after the meeting.

A second decision was made with regard to the Unit Flag. Yes they would like the Unit Flag there when they are at Guides. Where was ‘there’ to be though.
