Making informed decisions on how to do the Centenary Challenge badge

  1. The Leaders received the Youth members copies of the Centenary Challenge badge book.
  2. Discussion on how, when and where the badge syllabus may take the leaders and the District was held.  The Leaders were willing to support the Guides to revitalize their Guide meeting times knowing that when the Youth members are really enjoying themselves they and their happy parents bring in more families and prospective Guides.
  3. Also the information of all challenges was to be written onto ‘ours2share.wordpress.com’ in order to keep all parents, team, Leaders and Guides informed. Thus for filling part of the District Upgrade.
  4. The following meeting was with the Guide Youth members themselves.  So as part of the program each Guide was given their complimentary copy of the Centenary Challenge book.
  5. A discussion was held with the Guides. The Leaders were excited to hear what the Guides wanted to do.
  6. Firstly what was the Centenary Challenge badge.  How did this badge come around.
  7. Then the levels of the Centenary Challenge were explained to the Guides.
  8. The decision to complete the Centenary Challenge Badge by working through various colors until first level was completed was a novel way sorting out the Programing. The Guides wanted these colors completed during the Guide programs, events, service and activities.
  9. What color came first is another decision made by the Guides.  It was also understood that sometimes the progressive pattern may be muddled up but each of the first level sections and questions would be incorporated.
  10. How would the knowledge gained from the Centenary Challenge Badge be implemented into the Guiding program by the Guides themselves?
  11. Once earned the Guides would know that they had challenged themselves in different ways.

Upgrading the Hazelwood and Churchill Guide District

Standards and technology has changed many methods of ‘doing things’.  The old attitude of just getting in there and doing ‘it’ can not meet the current demands that fall on the Hazelwood and Churchill Guide District, the stakeholders and others that Guiding as a whole, touches through it’s Guiding presence.

Sounds terrific but what does this mean?

Simply put.  Old methods have had to leave, die out and generally be replaced.  New standards have been introduced and are being accepted.  The recognition that the new standards are multitasked and far reaching had to develop, and be implemented through new structure, understanding and demonstrations.  Once the District and those within started to follow these standard requirements there appeared so much to do to catch up.

A needs analysis was completed thus the main areas of concern were noted.  Available for viewing people were surveyed as to what to do about the main points.

  1. The District needed to come forward into the 21st  Century. Being informed and developing a shared management knowledge basis common to all levels and understood and used by all within the Hazelwood and Churchill District.  The challenge has taken time, is still developing,  growing and being learned and supported by all members within the District. From the five year olds to the day we are no longer recycled!
  2. Communication and information was a challenge as often time constraints for parents and careers meant that activities, event, service and camp information just was not getting through. Hence information is gradually being placed onto this “ours2share.wordpress.com site, and is being posted on Facebook, twitter and yahoo [although twitter is still a challenge]
  3. Youth membership had gradually dwindled.  Leaders either retired or moved on. The responses to these challenges were simply to build the Guides self respect and resilience of themselves and what they were doing to levels that were reinforced and self fulfilling, to encourage negative influences to leave the District and Youth movement, to reinstate the Olave program and provide a continuous flow of age groups. To then find new leaders potential.
  4. Where the District and Youth members met had various challenges. So the venue was changed back to the the old Glendonald Maternal and Child Health Clinic building Churinga Drive, Glendonald.
  5. Occupational Health and Safety were of  paramount importance. Has lead to extending trainings as well as the creation a safe united muti-aged untied front.
  6. The public had been told that the Hazelwood and Churchill District was no longer functioning. Increasing our profile, including others and getting actively involved in the community has assisted and is growing.  The input is really beginning to make a difference in all the Guiding aspects.  Not having a very large public persona, having a low ‘man power’ base to call on for maintenance of our assets, while being unable to use our traditional meeting place of over fifty years was unintentionally back this public perception up.
  7. Isolation issues from the public and the other Units within the Region. Lack of parental transport has long been an issue.  Glendonald Maternal and child Health Center building is on the bus route.  So meetings are timed around the transport home. The idea that the early aged meeting times the guides and their parents are able to walk and be dropped off then the parent may catch the bus back around Churchill.- or become a Unit helper etc.
  8. Negative slanderous comments just would not go away.  For over twenty years [that I know of] different families involved in different organisations believed they had to much to gain to stop. So it was decided to make no response to these comments.  Once people had a chance to recognize just what it was Guiding was all about, what Guiding offered and just how inclusive and developmental guiding actually was our membership statics would be better.  the tide is turning slowly.  This chance had to be made to happen.
  9. Was the program actually meeting the needs of the members. A telling statement.  But was what was offered actually what was needed.  How did we bring through leadership, Patrol traditions, service, governance, ownership and so forth.

SERVICE FLASH THAT BEGAN IN 2009

This Service Flash has  three level [One, two and Three]

A Guide may start the flashes at the age of seven for flash 1, nine for flash 2 and 11 for flash 3.  Each different level has a period of service required over a varing amount of time.  For instance level 2 Service Flash has a  minimum of fifteen hours of ret over three months which works out at approximately 1% hours per week. . This can “include service to your “immediate and extended family, school and Guiding.

What needs to be recorded and signed off for is the date the Service began and concluded. What Service has been  provided Length of time given,.  Of course a Signature  is a must too.

The total hours given may be copied from Look Wide 2009 edition Page 83.  So what needs to be purchased and filled out is an up to date Look wide book.  Available at the Guide Shop.

Family BBQ’s are just for fun

A few years ago the Units held Family get together’s.  This meant that the parents could meat and great each other.  Instead of being so and so’s mum or dad they met someone with a name!

These Family BBQ’s were quite successful for a while.  Being run once every two terms proved better than every term.  So in the middle of the first and third terms a night was chosen and things were arranged.

  • Advocacy, Governance and ownership by all levels of Guiding within this District.
  • No special agenda just good food and friendship.  Not a political evening. But a good way of quietly providing an avenue where parents and friends could be included and of assistance.
  • The Guides who could attend had an increase in their self confidence as their parents and families are important enough to be invited and come to a District function.  The mind set of having parents involved offered a protection around the guides attending.
  • The Guides attending quietly showcased their talents and skills learned through the night.
  • Risk annalysises were completed
  • Hostessed by the District Leader and the District team divided the work load.  Of course offers of help were taken up be they from Guides, the parents or family friends.
  • The District Team got together to divided the jobs.
  • Invites were sent out one month in advance.
  • The RSPA was two weeks before the date set.
  • Parents received reminder notices via face book and twitter as the evening approached..
  • Membership tended to increase as the public interest hightened.

ISLAM What is Islam?

Islam is a complete way of life based on the teachings of the Holy Quran (which is the

What does Islam mean?

Islam means peace and total submission and obedience to Allah (God).

What does Allah mean?

The word ALLAH is an Arabic term which means the one and only God who is the ^-/ creator and provider of everything. The word Allah is also the personal name of God. It is a unique term because it does not have a plural and it is neither a male or female term since Allah is genderless. It is therefore a more accurate term to use than the term God.

Global Action Theme is known as GAT

Global Action that has been ”Changing the World’ has been happening through out Girl Guide and Girl Scout programs for over 100 years. Action themes may have occurred on a World Wide basis involving the Regions of Guiding working together through our World Association of Girl guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) right down to just an individual question,action or activity sparking off a patrol activity that may lead to an International activity.  Global Action keeps occurring on a multitude of levels within Guiding.

As the members get older sometimes they move away from Guiding as their career develops or interests evolve, or they may stay within the movement, but the essence of having experienced the GAT is there. Typically Leaders bring into Guide program what they themselves enjoyed as a Youth member as well as what their interests and life skills are now.

The essence of service is still service. Over the years many form of service have been built on.  Different badges have been provided. The Guides have worked towards these with different service awareness and methods utilized.

So how is the GAT so successful? Simple really.  WAGGGS influences to have a voice and to listen.  Then to speak out, look at root causes and do projects.  While this occurs the Guides are learning.  And the life skills and interest circles are quietly going around still into the next generations.

What is an apple basic

Sometime people are so familiar with things that they do not know one is the other.  That is a chicken lays an egg, which a shop then sells. That egg white comes from the inside of the egg!  Or in this case an apple may be made into apple juice and apple pulp then used in two different recipes.

So the Guides were shown that if they peel several apples, core them, chop them up into pieces (sizes as evenly as possible) then cook these pieces aver a heat sauce with a little water you actually end up with a mixture from which the stained juice is apple juice and the remaining stuff in the strainer is the apple puree.

Cool and use as soon as possible.

But what do you use it for. So over time they have been shown the following: Apple juice, Apple Puree, Salad dressing, Apple pancakes.

When planning 2009 Tuesday program the girls decided to invite the CFA people to Guides. Little knowing that every one here would be so affected by the near by fires over the last two weeks.
