Preparing a camp fire

Choose a theme and sort out the camp fire program 

  • Learn the song selection [at least be familiar with.]
  • My favorite camp things
  • What about using the Yells, Chants, and camp fire games?

Know the campfire and flame safety rules.

Practice with marshmallows and candle.

Have activities in the dark.

Have alternatives for bad weather.

Make equipment to use at campfire

  • Notice board with emergency assembly area on display
  • Sign in / sign out book.
  • Campfire song book each member.
  • Making an entrance.
  • Marsh mellow sticks.
  • Water buckets.
  •  Camp Blanket.
  • Woodpile – graded.
  • Musical instruments
  • What about the campfire too?

Now just who is the target audience for this campfire.  Just the Guides as part of their program or a camp? Or the Unit or Adults such as the Gipps Guides too?  To be inclusive of friends and family? As a District event that is target to what audience.  The combination of the talents and skills learned by those preparing the campfire suggestions / evaluations made before, and who the target audience is strongly reflects the planning and management of the campfire.

Wanted: the arts of etiquette and conversation.

At a Gipp’s Guide meeting the topic of conversation ranged from what to do next meeting, different ideas for making pin wheels, learning and using more etiquette both at home and in Guide Meetings.  With or without Guests. Sounded strange to me as I had not consciously realised that there was a recognised need for social conversation practice along with etiquette.  In fact the Gipp’s Guide who initially made the comment went further and suggested that she include this learning approach in the Olave Baden Powell Award syllabus for herself. The long forgotten arts of etiquette and conversation that Lord Robert and Lady Olave Baden-Powell used were going to be resurrected.

Once one of the visitors was evicted [ the child and baby stayed] the Pin Wheels that they had been making was consumed by the guests and the Gipp’s Guides.

Lend a Hand

Lending a hand was the Motto for Brownie Guides. This being so we got the Brownies to trace around their own hand and then think of at least five things [ one per finger] that they could do to help some one over the  next week.

Gumnut Brownies learned to Care and Share, Brownie Guides were lending a Hand, Girl Guides Motto was to Be Prepared.  Ranger guides had the same Motto but their Guide Promise was extended in order that they take their Promise out into the Wider Community.  As you can see the Lend a Hand motto was preparing the Brownie Guides to join in with bigger and better service concepts and thus participate more in service planning that lead into positive  actions.

Lessons learned long ago are still there.

I have been checking out a link that I have from Facebook.  Heres my memory flash.:

I actually cannot remember what mine was.  1970’s are a bit long ago.  I do remember having to sew the darn thing onto my dark blue uniform sleeve.  Then finding out about a month later that I had sewn everything on in the mirror image.  I think thats when I learned to unpick my own sewing well.    Guess who had to sew everything back on the other way around.

Years later I got really hard to sew the badges down the sleeves, remove others as they had to be replaced when emblems took their place.  No wonder I enjoy informing the current guides that leaving the  badges on their sash (except patrol emblems) is a terrific idea. A personal history pathway that can lead to really great discussions with others who want to, are or have do a similar badge.

Yes I still sew things on in mirror image today.

Global Action Theme is known as GAT

Global Action that has been ”Changing the World’ has been happening through out Girl Guide and Girl Scout programs for over 100 years. Action themes may have occurred on a World Wide basis involving the Regions of Guiding working together through our World Association of Girl guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) right down to just an individual question,action or activity sparking off a patrol activity that may lead to an International activity.  Global Action keeps occurring on a multitude of levels within Guiding.

As the members get older sometimes they move away from Guiding as their career develops or interests evolve, or they may stay within the movement, but the essence of having experienced the GAT is there. Typically Leaders bring into Guide program what they themselves enjoyed as a Youth member as well as what their interests and life skills are now.

The essence of service is still service. Over the years many form of service have been built on.  Different badges have been provided. The Guides have worked towards these with different service awareness and methods utilized.

So how is the GAT so successful? Simple really.  WAGGGS influences to have a voice and to listen.  Then to speak out, look at root causes and do projects.  While this occurs the Guides are learning.  And the life skills and interest circles are quietly going around still into the next generations.

The overnight stay outcomes

Over the last few terms the Guides have been promised an over night stay.  These are the outcomes.

  • More overnight stays planned.
  • Skills upgraded.
  • Discovering the Four World Centers
  • Cooking knowledge and skills increased .
  • Exploration of International countries and some cultures.
  • Self development acknowledged
  • Still negatively geared re financial pathway
  • Made and used crafts, tools and teaching aids,
  • Promise and law explored.
  • Leadership skills obtained.
  • Patrols worked on.
  • Badges gained and progressed through.
  • Working on membership increase.
  • Life skills gained.
  • Hazelwood South Hall reused.
  • Guide traditions and Links of Unity explored.
  • Friendship bonds strengthened.

Choosing governace

Governance is about having the choice to choose, then knowing what to do with this choice.  All levels of Guiding are shown different processes for the same thing.

The 7 to 9’s are called Dolphin Patrol.  We already have the Koala Patrol for the 10 to 13’s.

We played Hop-Scotch. And we did some more of the Columbia badge.

Some more Guide revieved their sashes and some badges.

There were
Special Badges – 100 year celebration, Jota/Joti,  2 round badges called Build a better World, Discover your Potential.

Some Guides got their Explore: Freiendship badges.

We are nearly finished some others too. They are

Explore: Our World, Life Skills,Guiding, Outdoors, Arts

Some have started their Explore: Faith Awareness and their Explore: Health and Fitness and Science and technology badges.

And we have also begun the :
Challenge Badges: Girls, Rope, Food, Fire, Hands, The Arts.

Theres one called the Bridges over to Argetina and we have started that too.

        2. ii.      2 x (10 yr olds) girls attended before Walk around Churchill activity.  One Girl on the day (7 year old).

5. Training of leaders.

    • Walk around Churchill (preparation to evaluation, then next years one) organised by current trainee leaders,  unit helpers, Gipps Guides and Guides.

  • Car Shuffle
    • Licensed driver for car shuffle so that all cars arrived at departing time.
    • Parents who have access to a drivable car that they use regularly for their family actives need to realise that car pooling (by assumption) does not work. They need to get to activity by themselves.  Parents to read and note what’s on the Activity form.

10. Adequate clothing for event.

  • Hats and footwear still a concern.

11. Food preparation.

  • Food safety
    • Purchased just before the event and kept cool until used.
    • Food preparation certificates held by cooks.
    • Making sure that everyone to be fed and watered in group.
      • Note taken that all adults who participate are the first ones to be fed. Suggestion is that food for cooks and active adult participants is kept separately covered and warmed until participant is ready to consume in their rest period.
      • Have adequate fuel for stand by
      • Menu planned by Guides.
      • Overeager food orientated participants/adults are to be fielded away from the table holding/ cooking preparation areas.  Unless given a recognised job with a job description. This may be games coordinator rubbish removalist, Occ Health and Safety person etc.

12. Job descriptions

  • Adult assistances and parents not knowing where there assistance and skills boundaries lie. Job taken by one person then they are moved on by another.
